The Pumpkin Patch

A visit to the pumpkin patch is an annual event for many families. Beautifully colored fallen leaves grace the ground as fall has definitely arrived. It’s time to gather up the kids (and adults) and head to the local farm for a ride on the wagon out to the giant pumpkin patch. Finding that perfect specimen to decorate the porch, carve into a jack-o-lantern, or make into a yummy pumpkin pie is the task at hand.

The field is covered in pumpkins at the local pumpkin patch. Finding the perfect one can be difficult with so many choices. There are great big round pumpkins, tall and lean pumpkins, really oddly shaped pumpkins, and just plain goofy looking pumpkins. They all need a happy home. Gathering up several of all different shapes and sizes may be the only possible answer since it is so hard to choose just one.

It is possible to spend the whole day at a pumpkin patch. Many farms offer corn mazes to wind through. Others have horse drawn wagon rides with bails of hay to sit on top. Others have all sorts of gourds to look through and purchase to be friends with the pumpkins out on the porch. The gourds also make fun additions to the pumpkin carvings. Use of the imagination can create all sorts of fun animals with pumpkins and gourds.

The pumpkin patch can become a great family tradition if it is not already. The beautiful colors of orange that spread across the fields at a pumpkin patch are something to see. Don’t forget the camera as there will be plenty of photographs to be taken. Those photos may just make the perfect Thanksgiving card for the grandparents.

Editorial: Pumpkin patch vandals deserve punishment
We were dismayed and appalled by last week's vandalism incident at the Wildwood Dads Club pumpkin patch in Coaches Field. The vandals smashed 200 pumpkins, spray-painted obscenities and graffiti and left the patch in disarray. They pulled apart the scarecrows, scattered the hay bales and destroyed the 600-pound giant pumpkin. Organizers will try to replace the giant pumpkin that cost $400.

Thanks to the advice of Joe A. and Chris, I sampled Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale and Post Road's Pumpkin Ale. I would suggest giving both a try if you like pumpkin ale with your pumpkin pie or even your pizza pie.
